8 WAYS TO FEEL MORE ALIVE

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe, New Mexico

My husband and I took a holiday trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico. We visited dear friends who introduced us to wonderful southwestern food, art, people and culture. I loved the newness and aliveness of this experience. I woke up every day with a childlike sense of wonder thinking, “I want more of that…” New flavors, rich colors and creative people, providing new connections, experiences and ideas.

My mother used to tell me that “all good things must come to an end.” But do they really have to end? Does this aliveness and wonder only come when we go away to exciting places on fun vacations? Or is there a way that to capture this aliveness and wonder consistently in our everyday lives?

Here are some ideas to consider:

1.     Make room for something new in your life. Decide to offload some things you do that are “busy work” and add something that you’ve always wanted to do. Yoga class? Volunteering? Skiing or gardening? Or maybe explore that new career with a career coach? What makes sense for you?

2.     Review your morning routine and rearrange it. Go to bed earlier and get up earlier so you don’t have to hurry. Consider meditation. Listen to music instead of TV.  Tea instead of coffee.

3.     Try a new look. Hairstyle. Glasses. Makeup. Does anything come to mind for you?

4.     Create new connections. Look around you. Are there people who share similar interests or business professionals you work with? Initiate get-togethers. If you need some help finding new people, consider joining a Meet-Up Group.

5.     Try a new recipe. Are there recipes that you’ve wanted to try? Sushi? Risotto? Fondue? Thai food? Tofu?

6.     Be curious about the people in your life. Intentionally ask questions and learn. What is important to them?

7.     Do an intentional random act of kindness every day. Notice and acknowledge people around you who you don’t see in your normal busyness.  Ask someone if you can help. Pay for the person’s coffee behind you in line.  Send flowers. What else can you think of?

8.     Eleanor Roosevelt said “Do one thing every day that scares you.” What would that be for you?

I challenge you to stretch yourself and do something new that will add more aliveness to your life. Be intentional. Find a friend to hold you accountable. Better yet, find a friend who will do this challenge with you. Schedule feedback sessions.

And CELEBRATE – celebrate your braveness, your creativity and your enriched life!
